"Bonjour, hi," greeted the salesgirl in a shop of a famous Canadian jean chain in Montreal, an American woman cheerfully upon entry. How the conversation goes on, depends on the woman's response. At "hi" the conversation continues in English, with "bonjour" in French.
Montreal to Paris after the largest French-speaking sandwich baron menu city in the world, but with a large minority (20 percent) of the population who speak English as a first language. Moreover, the town near the English-speaking Canadian province of Ontario and there is a huge English speaking community in West Island, near Montreal. It is therefore not surprising that in the center sandwich baron menu of town store staff is bilingual and that the city alongside French-speaking universities, newspapers, schools and television also has English versions.
In practice, this Anglo-French mishmash sometimes small problems. A company like 'Staples' called in French-speaking Canada 'Bureau en Gros' sandwich baron menu and makes special Francophone commercials. But that French advertising can not be broadcast on the English-language station in Montreal. The English-language broadcast advertising can not, because it is made in English-speaking Canada or the US, where the store just 'Staples' hot. And so there must be a special advertising that is indeed in English, but who speaks Bureau en Gros instead of staples. And those long French speech, the director of Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal at the beginning of a jubilee performance? Which also must be in English so the performance longer waiting for it. Some supermarkets in the center means that they have to make their signs on the vegetable departments extra space because an English Canadian does not understand what a zucchini and therefore must read the word 'zucchini'.
The American woman who helped in the jeans shop will probably miss this little problems. She is particularly pleased that they are the few French phrases that are in her Lonely Planet does not try to speak, while they may still report that they are proud to home she has managed to keep standing in a French city.
